The U-Charge XP®series is a family of 12, 18, 24 and 36 volt battery modules, available in a variety of capacities, to be used as the building block of a larger energy storage system by assembling in series or parallel.  The modular approach allows for flexible configurations to match almost any voltage and capacity requirements.  Prototype systems can assembled faster than any time previously, therefore reducing project development time and decreasing non-recurring engineering (NRE) expenses.

U-Charge XP® batteries incorporate safe lithium iron magnesium phosphate (LiFeMgPO4) offering intrinsic safety with twice the run-time and 70% the weight of similarly sized sealed lead-acid batteries.  The U-Charge series offers energy storage solutions in standard battery sizes (per the Battery Council International) for a wide variety of applications.  They have been successfully used in commercial vehicles such as EV buses, delivery trucks, port tractors, and marine vessels.  XP modules are now being considered for new markets such as material handling, mining equipment and energy storage systems.

New 24 Volt Battery Series with Rugged Design

Valence recently announced its newest U-charge battery line, now available in 24 volts. The new 24XP series is ideal for stationary energy storage, material handling or marine applications with its rugged mechanical design and dual hole lug terminals. Battery Management System & Starter Kit (Required)

The BMS is designed to enable multiple system implementation configurations and advanced command and control ability. Additionally, the system automatically monitors and reports temperature, voltage, current and state-of-charge monitoring status. The Starter Kit enables quick connectivity to the rest of the system.

CANbus Toolkit

Monitors and logs data being transmitted onto the CANbus by the Battery Management System.

Diagnostics Toolkit

Enables a battery module to communicate directly with a PC. This toolkit allows for a battery ID to be modified or to update the modules firmware. It includes an RS485 to USB converter allowing easy data transfer.

Comparing U-Charge® LiFeMgPO4 to other chemistries

U-Charge XP Lithium Iron Magnesium Phosphate (LiFeMgPO4) modules have considerably greater energy density making them particularly suitable for numerous applications. LiFeMgPO4 is considered safer, less toxic, and more energy efficient with significantly longer cycle life.

Compared to Lead Acid

Commonly used in starter batteries for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles Lead Acid is normally a low-cost secondary battery, composed of a Lead-dioxide cathode, a sponge metallic Lead anode and a Sulphuric acid solution electrolyte. The heavy metal element makes Lead Acid batteries toxic and improper disposal can be hazardous to the environment.

Disadvantages of Lead Acid batteries include

  • Failure between several hundred and 2,000 cycles
  • Comparatively low energy density
  • Long charge time
  • Careful maintenance requirements

Compared to Nickel Cadmium (NiCd)

Disadvantages include:

  • High rate of self-discharge at high temperature.
  • Cadmium is highly toxic
  • Use in batteries is controlled
  • Environmental recycling issues
  • Memory effect is one of the biggest disadvantages to using NiCd.

Compared to Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH):

Disadvantages include:

  • Poor charge retention
  • Memory effect
  • Higher cost

Sodium (Na-NiCl2), aka zebra battery

When not in use, zebra batteries typically require to be left on charge, in order to be ready for use when needed.

If shut down, the reheating process lasts 24 hours, and then a normal charge process of 6-8 hours is required for a full charge. Inefficiency due to energy consumption when not in use.

This series of products requires the Battery Management System

Our battery modules are energy storage devices that can be configured in a variety of ways to meet the particular requirements of an application. To do so requires a properly configured Valence Battery Management System (BMS) for the system parameters and contactors. Generic or non-Valence BMS units are not suitable for use with Valence batteries. For safety reasoning, configuring of a Valence BMS needs to be performed by Valence or its authorized reseller. We do not support Valence products that have not been purchased directly from Valence or through an approved reseller.

The U-Charge XP modules are traditionally arranged in a multi-series/parallel configuration and not as a single battery replacement. Consider the U-Charge RT series for single module installs.
