Bus Manufacturer Partners with Valence for 5 Years and Deploys Over 45 Busses in Nottingham Medilink Project

AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 2, 2014 — Valence Technology, a manufacturer of safe, long‐life lithium ion magnesium phosphate batteries, today announced its product is being used in over 45 electric Optare busses in the city of Nottingham located in the UK.

These electric busses were deployed as a part of the Medilink service and the establishment of the Queens Drive Park & Ride initiative, which provides a free accessible bus service serving the City Hospital and Queens Medical Centre via two Park & Rides sites. The buses run every 10 minutes linking with both with tram and several key bus services. It currently transports over 1.26 million passengers per year.

The first stage of the electric bus project has successfully operated for over a year, with four fully electric Optare buses being used. The final two stages were completed this year and now include over 45 buses. The buses are equipped with a rapid charge system, which charges the vehicle at normal stops.  This extends their range throughout the day without interrupting service.

“Working with Optare has provided the opportunity to enhance the capabilities of our battery management system (BMS) to include a variety of charging technologies, including the CHAdeMO style charging and now wireless inductive charging,” said Marc Kohler, Director of Product Management, Valence.

Enrico Vassallo, Chief Executive Officer, Optare, added, “We have worked with Valence for over 5 years and are proud to see the Nottingham project reach fruition. We chose Valence batteries for our fully electric buses for several reasons. Their modular design eased the integration into our existing vehicles’ power pack designs, reducing development work, which in turn allowed us to prove the robustness of the technology on the road in a much shorter timescale and provided us with the confidence to deploy them in a greater number.  We are delighted that each additional Optare Electric bus continues to reduce the pollution for the citizens of Nottingham and other towns and cities across the UK and Europe.”

The Valence U-Charge series provides safe energy storage solutions in standard Battery Council International (BCI) lead-acid battery module sizes for a wide variety of applications. They are available in multiple configurations and incorporate a built-in battery management system. In addition, the battery series is fully-scalable and ensures a cost effective replacement for typical lead acid applications as well as provides twice the run time and up to 10 times the cycle life.
